During high school I have demonstrated that I am open-minded by being involved in after school activities and meeting new people, whether it is through sports, a job, or just traveling. All of the experiences that I went through helped me become more open about my opinions as well as take into considerations the opinions of others. I also got to learn and grow as a person by positioning myself in situations where interaction is required to uncover different ways of thinking and opinions. In the winter of 2016, my family and I went on vacation to Puerto Rico. This vacation really opened up a lot of door for me mentally and physically. I got to meet so many new people and spend time with family. I also got to connect to my roots and experience my culture. I played basketball with my cousins and some guys from the neighborhood. I met family from my stepdad's family, I got to witness new ideas and ways of thinking from people from a different region of the world. Joining sports during high school has also helped me step out of my comfort zone and has also assisted me in branching out to the players on my team.
Being an active participant in Lake Valley Camp allowed me to become more open-minded, every year we had to pick a session out of four to attend. Some people would always go to the same session, but there was always new people to meet. Every year there was new counselors from all over the world. When interacting with the kids and counselors I got to witness and take part in traditional and ethnic activities. I also go to get a taste of their beliefs and the values that they cherish. What really open my mind, was that even though we all had different opinions and view on certain thing we all had something in common and it was that we all shared the four beliefs which were:
* Every body has the power to change their world
* The community is better when everyone contributes
* Every living being has inherit value
* We can only grow if we are honest about your mistakes
This has helped me grow and become more open-minded when our team has to work together in order to correctly execute the plays on the field and court. I can say that I have become a better person at listening to what others have to say whether its on the court, at school, in the community or in my after school activities. These major steps that I took outside my comfort zone have transformed my way of thinking and have strengthened my relationship with my peers, teammates and family.
